Prenatal Dental Care in Rapid City

Rapid City Dentists Recommend Preventative Dentistry During Pregnancy

By bbm studios

Oral hygiene is important during pregnancy to help keep both mother and baby healthy.  Pregnancy increases hormone levels that can cause the build up of excess cavity causing plaque, otherwise known as “pregnancy gingivitis” - more frequent cleanings during the second trimester can help prevent serious gum disease.

“Gingivitis, if gone unchecked, can cause low birth weight and premature birth,” said Anh Nguyen, DDS of Rapid City’s Ray Dental Group.  “Although this is seen in extreme cases, it is best to stay on top of oral health to prevent any problems.”

Women will often notice the signs of pregnancy gingivitis during the first trimester, but it can been seen up until early in the third trimester.  Gums will be swollen, red, tender, and may even bleed.

A few simple steps can help to keep a healthy smile.
1. Brush teeth twice a day and after any meals or snacks
2. Floss to remove plaque buildup between teeth
3. Rinse with an antimicrobial mouthwash both day and night.
4. Cut down on sugary soft drinks and candies - this can help keep the mouth clean and cavity free.
5. Both toothpaste and mouthwash should have the American Dental Association’s seal or acceptance to insure the quality of the product.

“It may be helpful to ask the dentist or oral hygienist to show and explain the best way to brush and floss,” explained Nguyen. “It is the easiest thing that can be done to insure proper cleaning, a bright smile, and a healthy pregnancy”.
